Some
of us are old enough to remember that fateful day in January, 1977, when
we were all stunned by the early morning news reports that a commuter
train had crashed into the Bold Street Bridge at Granville NSW.
People spoke of being saved simply by missing the train or sitting in
a particular seat or carriage. Others died by giving up their seat as a
courtesy to a stranger. Eighty-three people died on that day and it
still stands as the worst rail disaster in Australian history. For years
the media followed the remarkable recovery of one particular young lady.
Her name is Debbie Woodgate
(Skow).

Debbie was crushed by 400
tonnes of concrete. Her carriage was flattened to just 45cm high as
the bridge fell directly on top of her. She was the last surviving
person to be removed from under the bridge some 12 hours after the
initial impact. Debbie's injuries were massive and doctors gave her
only a one percent chance of recovery. The story of her subsequent
survival reads like a textbook to the human spirit and will to
survive. Eighteen months in intensive care, eleven years in
rehabilitation and decades later we have a lady who not only beat the
odds but went on to walk again, marry, become a mother, work as a
volunteer in several charities and run her own business.

Debbie
established Mobility Options several years ago and due to
demand recently established a warehouse/superstore in Pennant Hills. For years Debbie, like so many
other disabled people, has been forced to pay high prices for mobility
aids due to the low production runs and high import costs.
Debbie and her husband Stephen, have travelled the world to negotiate
huge savings on wheelchairs, electric scooters, walking frames,
rollators, walking sticks and other aids to help the aged and disabled
stay mobile. As Mobility Options sells direct to the public at wholesale
prices, savings can be as high as 50 percent.
Debbie has been able to design many of the products she sells and has
insisted that manufacturers meet her high standards. The establishment
of this business venture is typical of Debbie's attitude to life where
she is still looking to help the aged and disabled.
